About Granite

Granite forms deep within the Earth's crust from the slow crystallization of magma (molten rock) over millions of years. It originates in igneous rock formations and is commonly found in areas with significant geological activity, such as mountain ranges and ancient volcanic regions. Granite itself typically does not contain significant amounts of copper. However, it can sometimes include trace amounts of copper-bearing minerals, such as chalcopyrite or bornite, which may impart a subtle metallic hue. These copper minerals are not prevalent in all granite types and, when present, are usually only in very small quantities. If you notice any coppery tones in granite, it is most likely due to these trace minerals or an effect of certain types of mica or iron-bearing minerals like pyrite (which can appear gold or metallic). Copper as a dominant component in granite is rare, but its related minerals may contribute to the overall color and texture.

Major Sources of Granite Around the World - Granite is quarried worldwide, but some countries are particularly well-known for their high-quality granite:

  1. Brazil – Famous for its exotic and colorful granites like "Verde Ubatuba" and "Blue Bahia."

  2. India – A leading producer, offering a wide variety of granites, including "Black Galaxy" and "Tan Brown."

  3. China – Supplies a large portion of the world’s granite, especially black and gray varieties.

  4. Italy – Known for premium, elegant granites, including the famous "Sardinian" granites.

  5. South Africa – Well-known for deep black granite, particularly "Nero Impala."

  6. United States – States like Vermont, Georgia, and Texas produce a range of granites for both domestic and international markets. Barre, Vermont, is especially famous for its light gray granite.

  7. How strong is Granite?

Granite is extremely strong and durable, with a high resistance to scratching and heat. It ranks about 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness (1 being softest and 10 being hardest), making it harder than many other natural stones, such as marble. This strength makes it ideal for use in countertops, flooring, and outdoor applications. (CLICK TO ENLARGE)

What types of finishes can be used on granite?

Granite can be finished in a variety of ways, depending on the desired look:

  1. Polished – The most common finish, where the surface is smooth and shiny, enhancing the color and texture of the stone.

  2. Honed – A matte or satin finish that is smooth but not reflective, offering a softer look.

  3. Leathered – Adds a textured, natural feel to the stone, with subtle bumps and ridges.

  4. Flamed – A rough texture achieved by exposing the granite to high heat, making it slip-resistant, often used for outdoor surfaces.

What edges can a granite counter be finished with?

Granite edges can be customized for aesthetic purposes. Common edge styles include:

  1. Straight Edge – Simple, clean, and modern.

  2. Beveled Edge – Features a slanted cut along the top edge.

  3. Bullnose Edge – Fully rounded edge, creating a soft and smooth appearance.

  4. Half Bullnose – The top of the edge is rounded, but the bottom remains straight.

  5. Ogee Edge – An elegant, curved "S" shape.

  6. Dupont Edge – Features a straight edge that leads into a rounded curve.

  7. Cove Edge – Features a concave radius along the top, creating a more ornate style.

  8. Waterfall Edge – Dramatically rounded to give a "cascading" effect.

Each edge style can dramatically affect the overall appearance of the countertop, making it easier to tailor to the design of the space.

How to care for your Granite counter and/or backsplash.

Caring for granite countertops and backsplashes ensures they stay beautiful and last for many years. Here are some tips for cleaning, sealing, and maintaining granite surfaces:

1. Daily Cleaning:

- Mild Soap and Water: Use a soft cloth or sponge with warm water and mild dish soap to clean your granite surfaces. Wipe the surface and dry it with a clean cloth to avoid water spots.

- Granite Cleaner: You can use specially formulated granite or stone cleaners for daily cleaning to protect the sealant and maintain shine.

- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use acidic or abrasive cleaners like vinegar, bleach, or ammonia, as these can dull the granite and break down the sealant over time.

2. Sealing the Granite:

- Seal the Surface: Granite is porous, so applying a sealant helps prevent stains and liquids from penetrating the surface. How often you need to seal depends on the type of granite and how frequently it's used.

- Test the Seal: Pour a few drops of water on the granite. If it beads up, the seal is still intact. If the water soaks in, it’s time to reseal.

- Frequency: Seal granite every 1 to 3 years, depending on use and exposure to liquids.

- Choose a Penetrating Sealer: Use a high-quality penetrating sealer for granite, which absorbs into the stone to provide lasting protection.

3. Preventing Damage:

- Avoid Heat Damage: Even though granite is heat-resistant, it’s best to use trivets or hot pads under hot pots and pans to avoid thermal shock or cracking.

- Avoid Heavy Impacts: While granite is durable, dropping heavy objects on it can cause chips or cracks, especially near the edges.

- Use Cutting Boards: Don’t cut directly on the granite surface to prevent dulling your knives and scratching the countertop.

4. Stain Removal:

- Blot Spills Immediately: Wipe up spills, especially of acidic liquids like wine, citrus juices, or coffee, to avoid staining.

- For Oil-Based Stains: Create a paste with baking soda and water, apply it to the stain, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it sit overnight. Clean it off the next day.

- For Organic Stains: For stains from food, tea, or coffee, use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, apply it to the stain, and let it sit before cleaning.

5. Polishing:

- Use a granite-safe polish to maintain the shine of the surface. Polishing is optional and should be done every few months to enhance the natural sheen of the stone. 6. Handling Scratches or Chips:

- For minor scratches or chips, use a stone repair kit designed for granite. These can include resin or epoxy fillers to repair small imperfections.

By following these tips, you can keep your granite countertops and backsplashes in great condition, ensuring they remain durable and beautiful for many years.
